My Comments, posted earlier on Facebook:AN JOSE, Calif. — The market for netbooks could explode from 35 million units this year to as many as 139 million in 2013, according to a report published today by ABI Research (Oyster Bay, NY).The ultra small notebooks pioneered by Taiwan's AsusTek have been a strong area of growth for a PC sector otherwise slowing to a crawl in the current recession. However, a debate has raged over whether the growth will be mainly focused on x86/Windows or ARM/Linux systems and whether that growth will come at the expense of traditional and more profitable notebooks.
Netbooks are likely to serve pent-up needs for full featured mobile devices not served by today's smart phones or the PDAs of the past, said ABI researcher Kevin Burden in his report. "Today, with a better understanding for what a smart phone is, is not, and may never be, the market remains open for new device types," he said in a prepared statement.
The report, "Mobile Devices Annual Market Overview" provides shipment and revenue forecasts as well as analysis on a variety of system types including mobile handsets, ultra mobile devices, broadband-enabled consumer electronics and cellular modems. (EETime)
